Yellow Lab Cichlid | The Golden Sunbeam
Yellow Lab Cichlid
Labidochromis caeruleus | Electric Yellow Lab | Yellow Labidochromis
Bring a brilliant burst of sunshine to your aquarium with the Yellow Lab Cichlid. Known for its striking golden-yellow coloration, contrasting black fin markings, and lively personality, this beautiful African cichlid is one of the most recognizable inhabitants of Lake Malawi.
Native to the rocky habitats of East Africa’s Lake Malawi, the Yellow Lab belongs to the Mbuna group of cichlids. Although generally considered one of the less aggressive Mbuna species, it still possesses the territorial instincts and social behaviors characteristic of African cichlids.
With proper aquarium conditions and thoughtfully selected companions, Yellow Labs can become colorful, active members of a thriving African cichlid community.

Aquarium Setup & Habitat
Yellow Lab Cichlids naturally inhabit rocky areas of Lake Malawi, where they explore crevices and forage among stones.
A suitable aquarium should recreate this environment with plenty of hiding places, secure rock formations, and open swimming areas.
Recommended aquarium features:
- Stable rock formations with caves and crevices
- Sand or smooth, fine-grained substrate
- Open swimming space between rocky territories
- Strong biological filtration and good water circulation
- Consistently alkaline, moderately hard to hard water
- A secure aquarium lid
Rockwork should rest securely on the aquarium bottom or another stable support, rather than on loose substrate alone, to prevent collapse if fish dig beneath it.
Yellow Labs may rearrange substrate and disturb delicate plants. Hardy plants such as Anubias or Java fern can sometimes be incorporated, particularly when attached to rocks, although plants are not essential to their habitat.
Water Quality & Maintenance
Like other Lake Malawi cichlids, Yellow Labs require stable water chemistry and excellent filtration.
Maintain temperatures between 75–82°F and keep the water alkaline, ideally within the species’ recommended pH range.
Ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero, while nitrate should be kept low through appropriate filtration, stocking, and regular maintenance.
Perform partial water changes of approximately 25–40% weekly, adjusting according to aquarium size, stocking density, and water testing results.
Avoid sudden changes in pH, hardness, or temperature.
Only introduce Yellow Lab Cichlids into a fully cycled aquarium.
Feeding & Nutrition
Although often described as omnivorous, Yellow Labs naturally consume many small invertebrates found among rocks and crevices. They should not be treated as strictly herbivorous Mbuna.
Provide a varied diet that includes:
- High-quality African cichlid pellets
- Appropriate spirulina-containing foods
- Frozen or live brine shrimp
- Mysis shrimp
- Occasional suitable vegetable-based foods
Feed small portions once or twice daily, offering only what the fish can consume promptly.
Avoid excessive feeding, fatty mammalian meats, and poorly balanced diets. Overfeeding can contribute to digestive problems and deteriorating water quality.
Compatible Aquarium Tankmates
Yellow Labs are among the more adaptable Mbuna cichlids, but their compatibility depends heavily on aquarium size, territorial arrangements, and the temperament of individual fish.
Potentially suitable companions include:
- Other Yellow Lab Cichlids in appropriately structured groups
- Rusty Cichlids (Iodotropheus sprengerae)
- Selected Acei Cichlids (Pseudotropheus sp. “acei”)
- Carefully selected Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara species), with sufficient space and close monitoring
- Certain similarly sized Lake Malawi cichlids with compatible temperaments and dietary requirements
Yellow Labs are generally best kept in an African cichlid aquarium designed specifically for Lake Malawi species.
Tankmates to avoid:
- Bettas and other delicate, long-finned fish
- Guppies, neon tetras, and small peaceful community fish
- Angelfish and discus
- Very small fish that could be harassed or eaten
- Highly aggressive Mbuna species that may dominate them
- Fish requiring soft, acidic water
- Large predators
Compatibility is never guaranteed. Even fish considered relatively peaceful can become territorial during breeding or when aquarium space is limited.
When keeping a breeding group, one male with several females can help distribute territorial and courtship pressure. Avoid keeping multiple males together in cramped quarters.
Behavior & Breeding
Yellow Labs are active, inquisitive fish that spend much of their time exploring rocks, caves, and open areas of the aquarium.
They establish territories and may display chasing, posturing, or other dominance behaviors, particularly during courtship.
Like many Lake Malawi cichlids, Yellow Labs are maternal mouthbrooders.
After spawning, the female carries fertilized eggs and developing fry inside her mouth, typically for approximately three to four weeks. During this period, she may eat little or nothing.
Provide adequate hiding spaces and avoid unnecessary disturbances to breeding females.
Acclimation & Arrival Care
Before your Yellow Lab arrives, prepare a fully cycled aquarium with stable temperature, appropriate water chemistry, and compatible inhabitants.
Upon delivery:
- Bring the shipment indoors promptly and inspect the fish.
- Dim aquarium lighting to minimize stress.
- Follow the shipment’s acclimation instructions, taking care not to prolong exposure to shipping water.
- Transfer the fish without adding shipping water to the aquarium.
- Monitor breathing, swimming behavior, and interactions with existing fish.
- Allow the fish time to settle before offering food.
A separate quarantine aquarium is strongly recommended for new arrivals.
Temporary hiding, faded coloration, and reduced appetite can occur following transportation.
