Amano Shrimp | The Garden’s Little Groundskeeper

Every beautiful underwater garden needs a devoted caretaker, and the Amano Shrimp takes its responsibilities remarkably seriously.

Dressed in delicate shades of translucent silver, soft gray, and earthy brown, this industrious little crustacean spends its days patrolling aquarium plants, driftwood, and decorations in search of algae and edible debris. A distinctive trail of reddish-brown markings runs along its sides, lending a touch of understated elegance to an otherwise practical creature.

Scientifically known as Caridina multidentata, the Amano Shrimp has earned a reputation as one of the freshwater aquarium’s most capable algae grazers. Growing up to approximately two inches long, it is larger than many ornamental dwarf shrimp and has an impressive appetite for the soft algae that can accumulate in planted aquariums.

Peaceful, endlessly curious, and rarely idle, these little groundskeepers are especially at home among lush aquatic foliage, where their natural coloring helps them disappear into the scenery.

Appearance & Characteristics

  • Scientific Name: Caridina multidentata
  • Common Name: Amano Shrimp
  • Coloration: Semi-transparent gray, silver, or light brown with reddish-brown dots or dashes along the body
  • Adult Size: Up to approximately 2 inches
  • Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social
  • Environment: Freshwater
  • Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: A mature aquarium of at least 10 gallons is recommended, with larger planted tanks offering additional grazing space.

Water Conditions: Amano Shrimp thrive in stable, fully cycled freshwater aquariums. Sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry can be harmful, particularly during molting.

Aquarium Environment: Live plants, mosses, driftwood, and natural hiding places provide excellent grazing surfaces and shelter. A secure aquarium lid is recommended, as Amano Shrimp are capable climbers.

Diet: Amano Shrimp are enthusiastic algae grazers, particularly when it comes to certain soft and filamentous algae. Supplement their natural foraging with quality shrimp foods, algae wafers, and occasional appropriate vegetable matter. They cannot eliminate every type of algae and do not replace regular aquarium maintenance.

Compatibility: Generally peaceful with other shrimp, snails, and small, nonaggressive fish. Avoid housing them with fish large enough to consider shrimp a meal.

Breeding: Although females may carry eggs in freshwater, Amano Shrimp cannot complete their normal reproductive cycle entirely in freshwater. Their larvae require brackish to marine conditions to develop successfully, making home breeding considerably more challenging than with many Neocaridina shrimp.

Special Considerations: Amano Shrimp are sensitive to copper-based aquarium treatments and sudden water parameter changes. Gradual acclimation is recommended.

A Tireless Little Gardener

The Amano Shrimp has little interest in being the center of attention. There are leaves to inspect, algae to investigate, and an entire underwater garden requiring its supervision.

And judging by how diligently it works, it seems quite convinced that nobody else is going to do the job properly.
