OB Zebra Cichlid | The Painted Maverick

A little wildness has arrived in the Sunken Garden, dressed in colors that refuse to follow the rules.

The OB Zebra Cichlid is a striking freshwater fish whose unpredictable patterns make each individual a living work of art. Splashes of orange, blue, black, and other contrasting shades create the distinctive blotched appearance that gives this remarkable African cichlid its name.

Native to the rocky waters of Lake Malawi in East Africa, the OB Zebra is a color variety associated with the Red Zebra Cichlid, Metriaclima estherae. Its distinctive Orange Blotch coloration makes it especially captivating, with individual fish displaying their own combinations of color and pattern.

But beneath that beautiful exterior lives a bold, territorial personality. This is no timid little ornamental fish. The OB Zebra Cichlid is confident, energetic, and perfectly willing to defend its favorite corner of the aquarium.

A colorful rebel with a commanding presence, it is best suited to aquarists prepared to accommodate the spirited nature of African Mbuna cichlids.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: An aquarium of at least 55 gallons is recommended for an appropriately planned Mbuna community, with larger tanks providing more territory and flexibility.

Water Conditions: OB Zebra Cichlids prefer hard, alkaline freshwater resembling the conditions of Lake Malawi. A temperature of approximately 76–82°F and a pH around 7.8–8.6 are generally suitable. Stable water chemistry and effective filtration are essential.

Aquarium Environment: Rocky aquascapes with caves, crevices, and visual barriers provide important shelter and territorial boundaries. Securely arranged rockwork is especially important, as Mbuna are active fish that may dig around decorations.

Diet: A varied diet emphasizing quality spirulina-based cichlid foods, vegetable matter, and appropriate Mbuna pellets helps support healthy digestion and coloration. Avoid excessive rich, animal-protein-heavy foods.

Compatibility: OB Zebra Cichlids are territorial and may become aggressive toward similarly colored or shaped fish. They are best kept in carefully planned African Mbuna communities with compatible species and adequate space. They are generally unsuitable for peaceful community aquariums.

Behavior: These active cichlids spend much of their time exploring rocky structures, establishing territories, and interacting with other fish. Their assertive personalities make them fascinating to observe but require thoughtful aquarium management.

Breeding: Like many Lake Malawi Mbuna, OB Zebra Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry fertilized eggs and developing fry in their mouths until the young are ready to emerge.

Special Considerations: Territorial aggression can increase during breeding. Appropriate stocking, hiding places, and careful selection of tank mates are essential. OB coloration occurs in multiple Malawi cichlid varieties, so confirming the supplier’s exact species identification is recommended.

A Masterpiece With an Attitude

The Painted Rebel has little interest in blending into the background.

With its dramatic coloring, confident movements, and determination to claim the finest rocky hideaway, this remarkable cichlid seems convinced that the entire aquarium was arranged for its personal enjoyment.

And perhaps, just perhaps, it has a point.
