Zebra Danio (Danio rerio)

With its shimmering silver body, brilliant blue horizontal stripes, and seemingly endless energy, the Zebra Danio brings a delightful sense of movement to the freshwater aquarium. Sleek and beautifully patterned, this lively little fish is a wonderful example of how nature can create extraordinary beauty through the simplest designs.

Also known as the Zebrafish, the Zebra Danio takes its name from the distinctive stripes that run along its slender, torpedo-shaped body. These alternating bands of deep blue and silvery gold catch the light as the fish darts through the water, creating a captivating display when several swim together.

Native to South Asia, particularly India and neighboring regions, Zebra Danios are naturally active schooling fish that inhabit streams, ponds, and other freshwater environments. Their adaptability, hardy nature, and peaceful disposition have made them longtime favorites among aquarium enthusiasts.

Curious, energetic, and always on the move, Zebra Danios are especially rewarding when kept in lively groups. Their playful swimming habits and striking patterns make them charming residents of The Sunken Garden, suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.

Aquarium Considerations

Zebra Danios are social fish that should be kept in groups of at least six, although schools of eight to ten or more are preferable. Maintaining a larger group encourages natural behavior, reduces stress, and allows their lively interactions to unfold throughout the aquarium.

These energetic swimmers appreciate generous open space, particularly along the upper and middle levels of the tank. A longer aquarium is preferable to a tall, narrow one, giving them room to display their impressive speed and agility.

Live plants, driftwood, and natural decorations provide shelter and visual interest, while areas of moderate water movement can encourage their active swimming behavior.

Although generally peaceful, Zebra Danios can be boisterous and may overwhelm particularly timid or slow-moving species. Avoid housing them with delicate, long-finned fish that may become stressed by their constant activity.

Suitable companions may include compatible rasboras, certain tetras, Corydoras catfish, and other peaceful fish that thrive in similar temperatures.

Zebra Danios are also accomplished jumpers, so a secure aquarium lid is strongly recommended.

Because they prefer somewhat cooler temperatures than many tropical aquarium species, avoid maintaining them long-term in unusually warm aquariums intended for fish such as Discus.

Feeding

Zebra Danios are enthusiastic omnivores that readily accept a varied diet.

Offer high-quality tropical flakes or small floating pellets as their primary food, supplemented occasionally with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.

Their small mouths require appropriately sized food, and their energetic feeding habits make them quick to investigate anything offered at the surface.

Feed modest portions once or twice daily, removing uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.
