Yellow Shrimp | Little Drops of Sunshine
Yellow Shrimp | Little Drops of Sunshine
A splash of sunshine has found its way into the Sunken Garden, and it seems determined to brighten every corner.
With their brilliant golden-yellow coloring and wonderfully busy personalities, Yellow Shrimp are tiny treasures of the freshwater aquarium. Watch them wander across moss-covered branches, investigate delicate aquatic leaves, and tirelessly search the substrate for their next little discovery.
A selectively bred variety of Neocaridina davidi, these cheerful crustaceans are prized for their vibrant appearance, peaceful temperament, and enthusiastic scavenging habits. Their coloring ranges from soft, translucent yellow to rich, opaque gold, creating a particularly beautiful contrast against deep green aquatic plants.
Hardy, sociable, and relatively easy to care for, Yellow Shrimp make delightful additions to established freshwater aquariums. And when conditions are right, a small colony may soon become a bustling little community of golden explorers.

Aquarium Care
Tank Size: A minimum of 3 gallons is suggested, although larger aquariums provide greater water stability and more room for a thriving colony.
Water Conditions: Yellow Shrimp adapt to a variety of freshwater conditions but do best in a fully cycled aquarium with stable parameters. Adequate mineral content is especially important for healthy molting and shell development.
Aquarium Environment: Live plants, aquatic mosses, driftwood, and natural hiding places create an inviting habitat. These surfaces also encourage the growth of biofilm, an important part of their natural diet.
Diet: Yellow Shrimp spend much of their time grazing on algae, biofilm, and decaying organic matter. Supplement their foraging with quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and occasional blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach.
Compatibility: Their peaceful nature makes them suitable companions for other nonaggressive freshwater invertebrates and carefully selected small fish. Keep in mind that even peaceful fish may eat baby shrimp.
Breeding: Yellow Shrimp reproduce readily in suitable freshwater aquariums. Females carry developing eggs beneath their bodies, and the young emerge as miniature versions of their parents. Dense plants, mosses, and protected filter intakes help improve the survival of newly hatched shrimp.
Color & Grading: Yellow Shrimp have been selectively bred for their distinctive coloration. Individuals with rich, even, opaque yellow coloring are generally considered higher grade, although natural variation occurs within colonies.
Special Considerations: Like other freshwater dwarf shrimp, Yellow Shrimp are sensitive to copper-based treatments and sudden changes in water chemistry. Gradual acclimation and consistent aquarium maintenance are essential.
A Little Golden Company
Yellow Shrimp have a remarkable talent for making an aquarium feel alive. One moment they’re carefully examining a leaf, the next they’re marching across the driftwood as though they have somewhere terribly important to be.
And with a whole colony of these miniature sunbeams at work, there’s always something delightful happening beneath the surface.
