Green Tiger Barb | The Emerald Rebel
Green Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona)
A flash of emerald beneath the water, the Green Tiger Barb is a lively and captivating addition to the freshwater aquarium. Its deep, iridescent green body shimmers with changing shades of jade and turquoise, while vivid orange-red fins provide a striking contrast against its darker coloration.
Also known as the Moss Green Tiger Barb, this beautiful fish is a selectively bred color variation of the classic Tiger Barb. Although its distinctive green appearance differs from the familiar striped variety, it retains the same spirited personality, energetic swimming habits, and unmistakable curiosity.
Native in its original wild form to Southeast Asia, particularly Sumatra and Borneo, the Tiger Barb is naturally a social schooling fish. Green Tiger Barbs are happiest when surrounded by their own kind, darting together through open water and exploring the aquarium with seemingly endless enthusiasm.
Their bold personalities and beautiful coloration make them wonderful residents of The Sunken Garden, particularly for aquarists who appreciate a little excitement beneath the surface.

Aquarium Considerations
Green Tiger Barbs are highly social fish that should be maintained in groups of at least six, although schools of eight to ten or more are strongly preferred. Larger groups help distribute their natural competitive behavior and may reduce persistent harassment of other aquarium inhabitants.
These energetic swimmers appreciate an aquarium with generous open space, complemented by planted areas, driftwood, and sheltered corners. Darker substrates and lush greenery can provide a particularly beautiful backdrop for their shimmering green coloration.
Despite their relatively small size, Green Tiger Barbs are not ideal companions for every peaceful community fish. Their playful but sometimes aggressive behavior includes a tendency to nip at long or flowing fins.
Avoid housing them with Bettas, Angelfish, fancy Guppies, or other slow-moving, long-finned species. More suitable companions may include appropriately sized, active barbs, danios, and robust bottom-dwelling fish that tolerate similar water conditions.
Good filtration, consistent water quality, and regular maintenance are essential for keeping these active fish healthy.
Feeding
Green Tiger Barbs are enthusiastic omnivores that enjoy a varied diet.
Offer high-quality tropical flakes or small pellets as their primary food, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
Vegetable-based foods can also be included to support a balanced diet.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, removing uneaten food to maintain water quality.
