Albino Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona)

With its soft ivory coloring, delicate peach undertones, and brilliant orange-red fins, the Albino Tiger Barb offers a beautiful variation on one of the aquarium hobby’s most spirited freshwater fish. Its pale, luminous appearance provides a striking contrast to the darker colors of a planted aquarium, particularly when a lively school moves together through the water.

A selectively bred color variation of the classic Tiger Barb, the Albino Tiger Barb displays the familiar vertical striping of its wild relatives in much softer shades of cream, gold, or pale orange. Its translucent-looking coloration and warm red eyes give this charming fish an especially distinctive appearance.

Originally descended from Tiger Barbs native to Southeast Asia, particularly Sumatra and Borneo, this captivating variety retains the energetic personality and social instincts that make the species so entertaining to observe.

Albino Tiger Barbs are curious, active, and rarely still for long. Their lively behavior makes them wonderful additions to thoughtfully planned community aquariums, although their occasional tendency toward fin-nipping means that choosing suitable companions is particularly important.

Aquarium Considerations

Albino Tiger Barbs are schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six, although eight to ten or more are preferable. Maintaining a larger school allows them to express their natural social behavior and can help reduce excessive attention toward other aquarium inhabitants.

Provide generous open swimming areas alongside dense planting, driftwood, and sheltered spaces. A darker substrate can beautifully highlight their pale coloration, while live plants offer additional security and visual interest.

Like other Tiger Barb varieties, Albino Tiger Barbs are known for their occasional fin-nipping behavior. They should not be housed with slow-moving or long-finned species such as Bettas, Angelfish, or fancy Guppies.

Suitable companions may include other active barbs, appropriately sized danios, and compatible bottom-dwelling species that tolerate similar water conditions.

Albino, Green, and traditionally colored Tiger Barbs belong to the same species and can generally school together, making it possible to create a colorful display of contrasting varieties.

Consistent water quality, effective filtration, and regular aquarium maintenance are essential for their long-term health.

Feeding

Albino Tiger Barbs are enthusiastic omnivores that readily accept a varied diet.

Offer high-quality tropical flakes or appropriately sized pellets as their primary food, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.

Vegetable-based foods may also be included to provide additional nutritional variety.

Feed small portions once or twice daily, removing uneaten food promptly to preserve water quality.
