The Fern's Finery | Italian Majolica Jardinière

FOR THE AUNT WHO HAS NAMED EVERY HOUSEPLANT AND WOULD ABSOLUTELY GIVE THE FERN THE GOOD CHINA

Some plant lovers are perfectly happy with a nursery pot.

Others believe the fern deserves something with a little more ceremony.

This vintage Italian majolica jardinière brings that idea to life with deep green glaze, ornate gold relief, and a richly decorative form made to turn a houseplant into part of the room.

Jardinières have a long history as decorative vessels for displaying plants indoors, becoming especially fashionable during the 19th century when Europe and America were swept up in “fern fever,” a period when fern collecting became a cultural obsession and elaborate fern stands and planters became part of fashionable interiors.

This piece dates to the mid-20th century, so it is not itself Victorian, but it carries forward that same decorative tradition: the idea that a beloved plant deserves something more beautiful than an ordinary pot.

A wonderfully specific gift for the plant collector who treats every leaf like family.
