Meet Maddy, the Goldfish Plant. For anyone whose last goldfish experience could have gone better.

Maddy is outgoing, a little cheeky, and happiest somewhere bright enough to show off. She prefers her spotlight filtered, though. Bright, indirect light suits her beautifully; harsh sunshine is taking the attention a bit too far.

Give her a shelf with room to trail, and she’ll gradually make herself comfortable over the edge. Her glossy green leaves are her everyday outfit. The little orange flowers? Those come out when she feels the occasion deserves it. She knows you’re waiting. She refuses to be rushed.

She appreciates a thoughtful drink, followed by a little breathing room. Let her soil dry slightly between waterings, and let excess water drain away. The goldfish are strictly decorative. Please don’t fill the pot like an aquarium.

Her perfect match? Someone who enjoys a bright personality, checks before watering, and would prefer their next goldfish to stay on the windowsill.

Botanical Name: Nematanthus
Common Names: Goldfish Plant, Candy Corn Plant, Brazilian Firecracker

Description: Maddy is a tropical flowering houseplant with glossy green leaves and stems that gradually arch and trail. Her little orange flowers add bright pockets of color among the foliage, making her a charming choice for shelves and hanging planters. Blooming depends on maturity, light, and growing conditions.

Care difficulty: 4/10 • Easy with a thoughtful routine

Light: Bright, indirect light. Protect her from harsh afternoon sun. Too little light can limit flowering.

Water: Allow the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. Avoid leaving her sitting in water or allowing the entire root ball to become completely dry.

Humidity: Appreciates moderate humidity and good airflow. Keep away from drying heating vents and air-conditioning drafts.

Soil: Use a loose, well-draining houseplant mix and a pot with drainage holes.

Feeding: Apply a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label during active growth. Reduce feeding when growth slows.

Temperature: Prefers warm, stable indoor conditions. Protect her from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and frost.

Flowering: Good light supports flowering, but blooms come and go. She can arrive without flowers and remain a lovely foliage plant between blooming periods.

Pet Safety: Nematanthus is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Discourage chewing and keep fertilizers and potting materials out of pets’ reach.

She enjoys attention, but checking the soil is more helpful than offering another drink. Her goldfish are quite happy without a full aquarium.
