Ghost Shrimp | The Little Phantoms (Pack of 25)
Ghost Shrimp | The Little Phantoms
A ghostly little creature has appeared in the Sunken Garden, though catching sight of it may require a second look.
Nearly invisible against the water, Ghost Shrimp are fascinating freshwater inhabitants whose transparent bodies reveal the delicate structures beneath their shells. Their long, feathery antennae sweep through the water as they explore aquatic plants, driftwood, and the quiet corners of their underwater home.
Also known as Glass Shrimp, these curious little crustaceans are wonderfully entertaining to observe. Their translucent appearance gives them an almost otherworldly quality, particularly when they move through a lush planted aquarium and seem to vanish against the scenery.
Despite their ghostly appearance, these shrimp are very much alive and remarkably busy. They spend their days investigating the substrate, gathering edible debris, and scavenging for leftover food.
Peaceful varieties make charming additions to suitable freshwater communities, bringing movement, intrigue, and a touch of the supernatural to the Sunken Garden.

Aquarium Care
Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group, with additional space for larger species or mixed community aquariums.
Water Conditions: Ghost Shrimp generally do well in stable, fully cycled freshwater aquariums. Consistent temperature, appropriate mineral content, and good water quality are essential for healthy molting and long-term survival.
Aquarium Environment: Live plants, aquatic mosses, driftwood, and sheltered spaces create an inviting habitat. Their transparent bodies provide natural camouflage, while dense vegetation offers protection during vulnerable periods after molting.
Diet: Ghost Shrimp are active scavengers that feed on algae, biofilm, detritus, and leftover food. Supplement their natural foraging with quality shrimp pellets, sinking foods, and occasional appropriate vegetable matter. Their scavenging contributes to aquarium cleanliness but does not replace regular maintenance.
Compatibility: Properly identified peaceful Ghost Shrimp can coexist with suitable small community fish, snails, and other peaceful invertebrates. However, several different shrimp species are sold under the name Ghost Shrimp, and some may be larger or more predatory than others. Avoid aggressive fish and any tank mates likely to prey on shrimp.
Molting: As Ghost Shrimp grow, they periodically shed their transparent exoskeletons. These delicate, empty shells can look remarkably like the shrimp themselves. Newly molted individuals often seek shelter while their new shells harden.
Breeding: Reproductive requirements vary by species. Some freshwater Ghost Shrimp produce free-swimming larvae that require specialized feeding and care, while others may have different developmental needs. Successful breeding depends on the exact species being kept.
Special Considerations: Ghost Shrimp are sensitive to copper-based aquarium treatments, sudden water chemistry changes, and poor acclimation. Because the common name covers multiple species, identification is particularly important when choosing suitable tank mates and care conditions.
Now You See Them…
There is something delightfully mysterious about a creature that can disappear without ever leaving the aquarium.
One moment, a Ghost Shrimp is carefully exploring a leaf. The next, it has seemingly vanished, leaving only the faintest movement of antennae to betray its hiding place.
And if you discover what appears to be a tiny ghostly shell resting on the substrate, don’t be too quick to mourn your little phantom. It may simply have slipped out of its old coat and wandered off to continue haunting the garden.
