Blue Mystery Snail | The Sapphire Wanderer
Blue Mystery Snail (Pomacea diffusa)
A little splash of blue beneath the water, the Blue Mystery Snail is one of the freshwater aquarium’s most charming and unusual inhabitants. With its beautiful blue-gray shell, softly colored body, and gentle, unhurried movements, this fascinating aquatic snail brings an unexpected elegance to planted aquariums.
Its delicate coloration can range from pale, silvery blue to deeper slate-gray tones, depending on the individual and the lighting. As it glides across aquarium glass, driftwood, and decorations, its long, inquisitive tentacles extend outward, giving it an almost whimsical appearance.
Commonly sold under the name Pomacea bridgesii, the Blue Mystery Snail is generally identified in the aquarium trade as Pomacea diffusa. Unlike many troublesome aquarium snails, this peaceful species typically leaves healthy aquatic plants alone, preferring softer algae, biofilm, leftover food, and decaying organic matter.
Curious, surprisingly active, and endlessly entertaining to observe, the Blue Mystery Snail makes a delightful addition to The Sunken Garden. Whether exploring the aquarium floor or stretching toward the surface for a breath of air, this little aquatic wanderer has a personality all its own.

Aquarium Considerations
Blue Mystery Snails thrive in established freshwater aquariums with stable water parameters, gentle hiding places, and plenty of surfaces to explore.
Adequate calcium and mineral content are especially important for maintaining a healthy shell. Soft or acidic water can gradually erode the shell, leaving it vulnerable to damage. Maintaining appropriate hardness and a stable, slightly alkaline pH helps support healthy growth.
Although Mystery Snails graze on algae and biofilm, they should not be expected to keep an aquarium clean on their own. They also produce waste, making regular maintenance and effective filtration essential.
Provide live plants, smooth decorations, driftwood, and open areas where your snail can explore comfortably. Unlike some larger apple snail species, Blue Mystery Snails generally do not consume healthy aquatic plants when properly fed.
Mystery Snails possess both a gill and a lung-like breathing structure, allowing them to obtain oxygen from water and atmospheric air. They may occasionally extend a specialized breathing tube, called a siphon, toward the surface.
A secure aquarium lid is essential, as these adventurous snails can climb above the waterline. Leave a small air space between the water surface and lid.
Avoid housing them with snail-eating species such as Clown Loaches, many puffers, or other fish known to attack invertebrates. Fish that nip at their delicate tentacles should also be avoided.
Copper-containing aquarium medications can be dangerous to snails and other invertebrates.
Feeding
Blue Mystery Snails are enthusiastic scavengers, but naturally occurring algae alone rarely provide a complete diet.
Offer a balanced selection of sinking snail or invertebrate pellets, algae wafers, and occasional blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or green beans.
Calcium-rich foods and appropriate water mineral levels help maintain strong, healthy shells.
Remove uneaten vegetables and other food before they begin to decay, and avoid overfeeding.
Breeding
Mystery Snails have separate males and females rather than being hermaphroditic.
Females lay clusters of eggs above the waterline, usually attached to aquarium glass or other surfaces. These egg clusters should not be submerged.
A female may also lay fertile eggs after mating before purchase, so the appearance of an egg clutch does not necessarily mean mating occurred in your aquarium.
If breeding is not desired, egg clutches can be removed and disposed of responsibly. Never release aquarium snails or their eggs into natural waterways.
