Black & White Shrimp | The Little Aristocrat

Dressed in impeccable black and white, this tiny resident of the Sunken Garden has rather particular tastes.

The Black & White Shrimp, commonly known as the Crystal Black Shrimp or Black Bee Shrimp, is an exquisite freshwater dwarf shrimp admired for its striking monochromatic markings. Bold bands of velvety black contrast against brilliant white, creating an appearance reminiscent of a miniature creature dressed for a grand occasion.

Scientifically known as Caridina cantonensis in the aquarium trade, these elegant little invertebrates are selectively bred for their distinctive patterns, with variations in color intensity, coverage, and symmetry contributing to their grading.

Unlike their more forgiving Neocaridina cousins, Crystal Black Shrimp are rather discerning about their surroundings. They prefer carefully maintained aquariums with stable, soft, slightly acidic water and reward attentive keepers with fascinating behavior and an extraordinary display of natural beauty.

Peaceful, delicate, and endlessly captivating, they are best suited to aquarists who appreciate the finer details of freshwater shrimp keeping.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: A mature aquarium of at least 5 gallons is recommended, although 10 gallons or larger offers greater stability for these sensitive shrimp.

Water Conditions: Crystal Black Shrimp generally prefer soft, slightly acidic freshwater, often with a pH of approximately 5.5–6.5. Stable temperature, low carbonate hardness, and appropriate mineral levels are essential. Many keepers use remineralized reverse-osmosis water and an active buffering substrate to maintain suitable conditions.

Aquarium Environment: A well-established planted aquarium with aquatic mosses, driftwood, leaf litter, and plenty of hiding places provides an inviting habitat. These surfaces support the growth of biofilm, an important natural food source.

Diet: Black & White Shrimp graze on biofilm, soft algae, and decomposing organic matter. Supplement their natural foraging with high-quality shrimp foods formulated for Caridina, along with occasional appropriate vegetable matter. Avoid overfeeding, as deteriorating water quality can quickly affect their health.

Compatibility: Their peaceful temperament makes them suitable companions for other compatible dwarf shrimp and carefully selected freshwater snails. Shrimp-only aquariums are often preferred for breeding colonies, as even small fish may prey on young shrimp.

Breeding: Crystal Black Shrimp can reproduce in freshwater when conditions are suitable. Females carry developing eggs beneath their abdomens, and the young hatch as miniature shrimp. Stable water chemistry and abundant biofilm are especially important for successful breeding.

Color & Grading: These shrimp are selectively bred for their striking black and white patterns. Grading considers the quality, opacity, and arrangement of their markings, with individual appearance varying naturally.

Special Considerations: Crystal Black Shrimp are more sensitive to changes in water chemistry than many Neocaridina varieties. They are not recommended for newly established aquariums or inexperienced shrimp keepers. Avoid copper-based medications, sudden parameter changes, and unsuitable mineral levels.

A Most Distinguished Little Guest

There is something delightfully amusing about a creature scarcely larger than an inch behaving as though it belongs in the finest residence beneath the water.

The Black & White Shrimp may spend its days grazing on moss and investigating driftwood, but it does so with an unmistakable air of distinction.

A little aristocrat of the Sunken Garden, impeccably dressed and quite particular about the company it keeps.
