Black Racer Nerite Snail | The Midnight Racer
Black Racer Nerite Snail | The Midnight Racer
Vittina sp. | Black Racer Nerite Snail
Dressed in a sleek, nearly black shell and forever on the move, the Black Racer Nerite Snail brings a little mystery to The Sunken Garden.
Despite its rather intimidating name, this dark-shelled wanderer is a peaceful creature with a surprisingly industrious personality. While the rest of the aquarium goes about its business, the Black Racer is busy patrolling the glass, inspecting decorations, and investigating every algae-covered corner it can reach.
It doesn’t demand attention. It simply gets on with the job, looking rather sophisticated while doing it.
The Midnight Maintenance Crew
Black Racer Nerite Snails are excellent grazers, feeding on many types of soft algae and biofilm that develop on aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, and decorations.
Their small size allows them to navigate planted aquariums without disturbing most healthy aquatic plants, making them particularly appealing for carefully arranged aquascapes.
Although hardworking, they aren’t a substitute for regular aquarium maintenance, and they may not consume every type of algae.
Personality & Appearance
With a smooth shell ranging from deep brown to nearly jet black, the Black Racer provides a beautiful contrast against bright green aquatic plants, pale sand, and natural stone.
Typically reaching approximately one inch, these compact little explorers are active, peaceful, and remarkably determined.
They make excellent companions for many peaceful community fish and shrimp, although snail-eating fish should be avoided.
Common Name: Black Racer Nerite Snail
Scientific Classification: Neritidae; exact species varies by supplier
Adult Size: Approximately 1 inch
Temperament: Peaceful and active
Aquarium Type: Freshwater
Diet: Algae and biofilm grazer
Care Level: Beginner to intermediate
Care & Aquarium Requirements
- Water Temperature: Approximately 72–82°F
- pH: Approximately 7.0–8.5, with stable, mineral-rich water preferred
- Tank Size: At least 5 gallons for a suitably established aquarium
- Diet: Natural algae and biofilm, supplemented with appropriate snail foods when accepted
- Shell Health: Adequate calcium and water hardness support healthy shell development
- Aquarium Maturity: Best introduced into an established aquarium with sufficient natural grazing surfaces
- Aquarium Lid: A secure lid is recommended, as Nerite Snails may climb above the waterline
Unlike many freshwater snails, Nerite Snails cannot complete their reproductive cycle in ordinary freshwater aquariums. Females may still deposit small white eggs on hard surfaces, but these will not normally hatch successfully in freshwater.
Avoid copper-based medications and treatments harmful to aquatic invertebrates.
A Note From The Sunken Garden
The Black Racer has places to be, algae to inspect, and absolutely no interest in explaining its schedule.
A tiny creature dressed for midnight, working tirelessly in broad daylight.
Every aquarium could use a little mystery.
