Queen Regina | Alocasia Black Velvet
Meet Queen Regina, the Alocasia Black Velvet.
Her Majesty is a woman of impeccable taste, unquestionable authority, and absolutely no tolerance for foolishness.
Draped in luxurious, nearly black velvet leaves adorned with striking silver veins, Regina presides over her little corner of the kingdom with the quiet confidence of someone who has never once considered the possibility that she might be wrong.
Her botanical name, Alocasia reginula, translates to “little queen.” Naturally, the unfortunate botanist responsible for the word little has been permanently banned from the palace.
Regina considers herself a fair and loving ruler. Her subjects might disagree, but most have wisely chosen to remain silent. She has been known to threaten an execution over an improperly arranged windowsill, a draft through the royal chambers, or the suggestion that she might be receiving too much attention.
And then, of course, there’s her darling son, Lucien.
Regina adores Lucien. Absolutely worships him. She simply cannot understand why he insists on having his own space, making his own decisions, or occasionally existing outside her immediate supervision. She only asks that he remain within sight, report any changes to his watering schedule, and consult her before making any significant life choices.
Lucien calls it suffocating. Regina calls it motherhood.
Despite her intimidating reputation, Her Majesty is rather particular about her own comfort. She expects bright, indirect light, appropriately warm surroundings, and soil kept comfortably moist without becoming waterlogged. Neglect is unacceptable, but excessive attention is equally offensive.
The royal gardener has learned to tread carefully.
Her perfect match? Someone who appreciates dramatic beauty, respects a woman’s boundaries (even when she refuses to respect anyone else’s), and understands that keeping a queen happy requires a delicate balance of devotion and discretion.
After all, Her Majesty does not ask for much.
Only absolute loyalty.
And perhaps the occasional head.
Botanical Details & Care
- Botanical Name: Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’
- Common Names: Black Velvet Alocasia, Little Queen Alocasia, Jewel Alocasia
- Description: A compact tropical Alocasia featuring thick, velvety, nearly black leaves with striking silvery-white veins and contrasting reddish-purple undersides.
- Care Difficulty: 7/10
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch her royal velvet.
- Water: Water when the upper inch or so of soil begins to dry. Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, but never soggy. Reduce watering during slower growth or dormancy.
- Humidity: Prefers elevated humidity, ideally around 60% or higher, with good airflow.
- Temperature: Ideally 65–85°F. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below approximately 60°F.
- Soil: A loose, well-draining aroid potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged.
- Pets: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if chewed or ingested due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from curious pets and children.
A Royal Advisory: Queen Regina may occasionally shed an older leaf as new growth emerges, and she can enter a period of slower growth or dormancy when conditions change. This is not necessarily cause for alarm. However, consistently yellowing leaves, soft stems, or persistently wet soil may indicate a watering problem.
Her Majesty appreciates attentive care, not constant interference.
