Dante | Variegated Devil's Backbone Euphorbia
Meet Dante, the Variegated Devil’s Backbone Euphorbia.
Dante has never been interested in taking the straight path.
His stems zig, zag, and change direction whenever they please, which suits him perfectly. He has strong opinions, excellent boundaries, and very little interest in explaining either. With green and cream variegation that can blush pink or red under the right conditions, Dante somehow manages to look polished while behaving completely unpredictably.
He likes bright light, warm surroundings, and plenty of personal space. He is perfectly capable of going a while without hearing from you, and frankly prefers it that way. Water him thoroughly, then give him time to dry out before checking in again. Hovering with a watering can will not strengthen the relationship.
Dante is resilient, independent, and considerably easier to live with than his name suggests. He asks for very little, but he does expect you to respect his boundaries. Damaged stems produce a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested, so this is one relationship where keeping your hands to yourself is genuinely good advice.
His perfect match? Someone who appreciates unusual beauty, respects personal space, and understands that affection does not have to be expressed through constant attention.
“Straight lines are terribly predictable.”
• Botanical Name: Euphorbia tithymaloides
• Common Name(s): Variegated Devil’s Backbone, Zigzag Plant, Jacob’s Ladder
• Description: Euphorbia tithymaloides is a tropical succulent shrub known for its distinctive zigzagging stems and variegated foliage. Leaves are typically green and cream and may develop pink or reddish tones depending on light, temperature, and growing conditions. Its unusual growth habit gives the plant a sculptural appearance, while its drought tolerance makes it relatively easy to maintain once its watering needs are understood.
• Care difficulty: 3/10 • Independent and forgiving
Light: Bright light encourages strong growth and the best variegation. Bright, indirect light is ideal indoors, although some gentle direct sun can be beneficial once acclimated.
Water: Allow much of the soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain completely. Water less frequently during cooler periods or slower growth.
Soil: Use a loose, fast-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Avoid dense soil that remains wet around the roots.
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged exposure to low temperatures.
Humidity: Normal household humidity is usually fine. No special humidity routine is needed.
Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted succulent or houseplant fertilizer according to label directions.
Maintenance: Pruning can help control height and encourage branching. Wear gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems because the milky sap may irritate skin and eyes.
Pet Safety: Euphorbia sap can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children and wear gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems.
His independent streak comes with one major weakness: soggy soil. Too much attention with the watering can is far more dangerous to Dante than a little neglect.

Plant Disclosure
You will receive a live Variegated Devil’s Backbone Euphorbia in the pot size selected. Each Dante grows a little differently, so height, branching pattern, stem shape, leaf count, variegation, and overall form naturally vary. Cream, green, pink, and reddish coloration may also change depending on light, temperature, season, and individual growth. Listing photos show representative plants. A decorative planter is included only when specified in the selected option.
Minor cosmetic blemishes, small scars, leaf loss, or temporary shipping stress may occur. Unpack promptly, place in bright light, and check the soil before watering. Allow the soil to dry substantially between waterings and never leave the roots sitting in standing water.
If Dante arrives with significant damage or a condition concern, contact hello@ilexatelier.com within 24 hours of delivery. Include your order number and clear photos of the entire plant, affected areas, shipping box, and shipping label. Keep the plant and packaging while we review your concern.
